Day 2, Friday Oct 24 : Larco Museum, Colonial Pachacamac (Overnight Lima) B | L

The tour begins with a visit to the Larco Museum, one of Peru’s most important cultural institutions. Housed in an 18th-century vice-royal building, the museum boasts an extensive collection of pre-Columbian art from ancient Peru. It showcases over 45,000 pieces, including ceramics, textiles, metalwork, and mummies. One of the highlights is the erotic pottery collection, which provides a unique glimpse into ancient Peruvian beliefs and customs. The museum’s beautiful gardens and informative exhibitions offer a deep dive into the history of Peru’s civilizations.
After exploring the museum, you’ll have the option to enjoy lunch at the museum’s restaurant, which serves a variety of traditional Peruvian dishes with a modern twist.

In the afternoon, the tour continues to Pachacamac, an important pre-Columbian religious center located about 40 km southeast of Lima. This site was a major pilgrimage destination for the ancient cultures of the central coast of Peru. The ruins include impressive pyramids, temples, and palaces, including the Temple of the Sun, a place of worship for the Inca and earlier cultures. The influence of Spanish colonialism is also evident in the church of San Pedro located near the site, offering a fascinating contrast between the pre-Columbian and colonial eras.
After visiting Pachacamac, the tour returns to Lima for the evening.

Day 3, Saturday 25 October: Caral in the AM, fly to Cusco (Overnight Cusco) B | L

Morning Visit to Caral: The day begins early with a visit to Caral, located approximately 3.5 hours from Lima. Caral is the oldest known civilization in the Americas, dating back over 5,000 years, as old as the Old Kingdom of Ancient Egypt. As you explore the site, you’ll see impressive pyramids, circular plazas, and temples, showcasing the advanced urban planning and culture of this ancient society. A local guide will walk you through the site, explaining its architectural achievements, social structure, and the key role Caral played in the development of civilization in the Americas.

Lunch: After your tour of Caral, you’ll have the option to enjoy a delicious lunch in a nearby town before heading back to Lima for your flight to Cusco (Afternoon/Early Evening). Flight time is approximately 1.5 hours. Upon arrival in Cusco, you’ll be transferred to your hotel for check-in.

Overnight in Cusco: Once in Cusco, you’ll check into your hotel to rest. This will give you a chance to acclimate to the high altitude (Cusco is situated at 3,400 meters/11,150 feet above sea level) and relax after an exciting and busy day.

Notes on Altitude: It does take a couple days to get used to high altitude (above 10,000 feet). Most people are fine. Some people can suffer from mild ‘altitude sickness’ which may include mild headaches, nausea, or trouble sleeping. The best thing to do is to drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, and rest. Your body will adjust to the lower oxygen level. You can also consult your doctor and get prescription altitude medicine (diamox or similar) if you think it’s appropriate.

Day 4, Sunday 26 October: Cusco Streets, Coricancha, Acclimatization (Overnight Cusco) B | L

Your day begins with a guided walking tour through Cusco’s charming streets, where colonial architecture blends seamlessly with Inca ruins and megalithic stonework. We will begin to show you the difference between Inca work, and the true megalithic origins of this ancient and unique city, with layers of Inca, colonial and then modern architecture on top. As you explore the narrow, cobblestone alleyways, you’ll be captivated by the city’s unique charm, discovering hidden gems, lively plazas, and the fascinating contrast between the influences of the different building styles. Stops may include the bustling Plaza de Armas, the San Blas neighborhood, known for its artisan workshops, and the local markets, where you’ll experience the colors, flavors, and spirit of Cusco’s vibrant modern culture.

Acclimatization: Cusco’s altitude of 3,400 meters (11,150 feet) requires time for proper acclimatization to avoid altitude sickness. After the morning walk, you’ll have a break to rest, drink plenty of fluids, and take it easy, allowing your body to adjust. Your guide will share tips on how to stay comfortable at this high elevation, ensuring a pleasant experience throughout your stay.

In the afternoon, you’ll visit the Coricancha, also known as the Temple of the Sun, featuring incredible megalithic stonework and examples of advanced tooling. It’s also the entry point to the ‘Chicana’ or labyrinth, and the tunnels that connect it to Sacsayhuaman that were long rumored, and recent confirmed to exist. Located in the heart of Cusco, the Coricancha was a huge megalithic structure, connected to Cusco and Sacsayhuaman, then a magnificent temple dedicated to Inti, the Sun God, adorned with gold and silver, and today it’s a Catholic Church. It’s an excellent example of the renovation and re-use of megalithic structures into what they represent today. The site offers an exceptional blend of megalithic stonework, Inca spirituality, and colonial history, offering deep insights into the ancient and modern cultures of Peru. After a day of exploration and acclimatization, you’ll return to your hotel in Cusco for a comfortable overnight stay.

Day 5, Monday 27 October: Sacsayhuaman, Quenqo, Temple of the Moon (Overnight Cusco) B | L

Start with a visit to Sacsayhuamán, one of the true highlights of the trip, a massive megalithic structure known for its impressive stone walls, perfectly fitted together without mortar, showcasing
remarkable ancient engineering and logistics.

Next, head to Qenqo, a mysterious archaeological site believed to have been a ceremonial center (I think it’s far, far older than the Inca) that featuring a series of carved rocks and tunnels used for rituals.

Finally, explore the Temple of the Moon, a sacred site associated with the lunar cult, located near Qenqo, which offers a vision of Inca spiritual practices. Again, this ‘hanan pacha’ site appears tremendously ancient. Take a short walk along the Inca trail to the Plaza del Cusco, we will have a lunch of Cusco gastronomy.

Overnight JW Mariott Cusco

Day 6, Tuesday 28 October: Sacred Valley, Killarumiyoq, Zurite, Naupa Inglesia (Naupa Huaca) (Overnight Ollantaytambo) B | L

We begin with a visit to Killarumiyoq, an ancient site famous for its carved stone elements and its spiritual significance to the moon. Continue to Zurite, a small town with impressive agricultural terraces and ruins, offering a glimpse of the Inca lifestyle.

Enjoy a Peruvian picnic with organic products and local flavors that reflect the rich culinary heritage of the region. After the tasting we will visit the ancient temple of Naupa Iglesia, accessed by a hidden terraced path, located in a picturesque setting in the valley. It features some of the most interesting and remarkable stonework in the sacred valley, and is rarely visited. There is a short, steep hike up to the site, take your time!

Accommodation in the megalithic town of Ollantaytambo, in the picturesque Sacred Valley. Easy walking distance into the charming town square to enjoy the restaurants, shops and the friendly atmosphere.

Day 7, Wednesday 29 October: Ollantaytambo Sun Temple and Town Tour (Overnight Ollantaytambo) B | L

Begin your day with a visit to the Sun Temple of Ollantaytambo, a majestic site that was once a key ceremonial and military stronghold of the Incas, but with deep and impressive megalithic origins. In my opinion it is the best example of the 3 clear and distinctly different building styles in evidence in the Sacred Valley, as well as displaying obvious renovation and re-use by the Inca. Explore the impressive stone terraces and the temple complex, which offers spectacular views of the surrounding valley and mountains.

Next, stroll through the town of Ollantaytambo, one of the best preserved Inca towns in Peru, again with deep and impressive megalithic foundations. With its original Inca streets, water channels, and the impressive town square, you’ll feel transported back in time. Explore the local markets, interact with the friendly residents, and discover the unique architecture that blends megalithic, Inca and colonial influences.

Overnight Hotel Pakaritampu Ollantaytambo.

Day 8, Thursday 30 October: Optional Ollantaytambo Quarry Hike, or Puma Marca (Hike Down) or just relax in town. (Overnight Ollantaytambo). B | L

Option 1: After an Andean breakfast we will begin a walk to the Ollantaytambo quarry, the source of the enormous stones used in the construction of the Temple of the Sun and other structures in the city. This panoramic walk will take you to the quarry, offering stunning views of the Sacred Valley and is a baffling mystery as to just how these enormous 80-100+ ton granite stones were transported in this rugged environment.

I would consider this a relatively strenuous hike. It will take several hours to complete, and mileage of around 8-9 miles and at least 2-3 thousand feet of elevation gain, with a steep descent, all in the relatively high altitude of the Sacred Valley. Please do not attempt this hike if you are not confident. There is a possibility of renting local donkeys or horses to assist in ‘up’ portion, but they cannot bring you back down the steep descent, following the trails of the ‘lazy stones.’ We (Russ and Ben) completed this hike in Feb of 2025, and we can certainly discuss it in the zoom meeting.

Option 2: Pumamarca Walk (walk down). Alternatively, you can take the Puma
Marca hike, which will take you to a fascinating Inca site located above Ollantaytambo. The descent hike offers panoramic views of the valley and the opportunity to discover less-visited Inca ruins, with the option to descend at a comfortable pace while exploring the surrounding natural beauty.

Option 3: Relax. For those who prefer a more relaxed experience, enjoy a relaxing day in Ollantaytambo, where you can explore the city’s markets, take a stroll through the Incan streets or simply relax in a local cafe, soaking in the tranquil atmosphere of the Sacred Valley.

After the activities we will taste a pachamanca, the most representative dish of Andean gastronomy.

Day 9, Friday 31 October: Machu Picchu (Overnight Aguas Calientas) B| L

This unforgettable tour takes you to one of the most iconic destinations in the world, Machu Picchu, the ancient Inca citadel nestled high in the Andes.
Start your adventure with an early train ride from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes, the gateway town to Machu Picchu. Upon arrival, you’ll take a short bus ride up to the site, where your expert guide will lead you through the breathtaking ruins. Explore the Inca temples, terraces, and plazas, learning about the history, culture, and mysteries of this spectacular site. With its stunning views, remarkable stone structures, and ancient megalithic core, Machu Picchu is a ‘must-see’ for any traveler interested in ancient civilizations.

In the afternoon, you’ll return to Aguas Calientes to spend the night. This charming town, located at the foot of Machu Picchu, offers a variety of restaurants, shops, and relaxing accommodations. You can enjoy a leisurely dinner, explore the town at your own pace.

Day 10, Saturday 1 November: Huayna Picchu Hike or other optional activities: Waterfalls/Hot Springs/Aguas Calientas. (Overnight Urumbamba) B | L

This dynamic tour offers an exciting and personalized experience of Machu Picchu, with the option to hike Huayna Picchu or explore other activities that cater to different interests and levels of adventure.
For adventurous travelers, the Huayna Picchu hike is a must-do. This challenging and rewarding trek leads you to the summit of the mountain that overlooks the Machu Picchu citadel, providing breathtaking, panoramic views of the site and the surrounding Andes. The hike is steep and requires a moderate level of fitness, but the stunning views at the top make it well
worth the effort. The hike typically takes about 1-2 hours, and it’s an excellent way to experience Machu Picchu from a unique perspective.

For those who choose not to climb Huayna Picchu, there are nearby spectacular waterfalls to Aguas Calientes that are accessible via a short hike, and also the opportunity to enjoy natural hot springs and relax!

In the afternoon we will take our return train journey back to Ollantaytambo, then begin our voyage south towards Lake Titicaca, stopping in Urumbamba for the night.

Day 11, Sunday 2 November: Drive to Puno, Raqchi, Sillustani (Overnight Puno) B | L

Your journey begins with a comfortable drive through the Sacred Valley, offering stunning views of the Andean landscapes. As you travel south, your guide will share insightful information about the region’s culture and history. We will also have the opportunity for Q&As with your hosts as we will be spending most of the day on the bus, as we traverse and climb through the Andes. The high point of the pass (with a brief stop) is just over 14,000 feet!
The first major stop is Raqchi, an impressive archaeological site known for the Temple of Wiracocha. Explore the vast ruins, including the large central structure, storage buildings, and other Inca architectural marvels that
showcase the grandeur of the Inca civilization.
Continue your journey to the town of Ayaviri, where you’ll enjoy a delicious traditional Peruvian lunch. This peaceful stop offers the chance to relax
and taste local specialties before continuing your journey.
After lunch, head to Sillustani, an ancient burial site located on the shores of Lake Umayo. This fascinating site features impressive Chullpas (funeral towers) built by the Pre-Inca culture, then repaired and imitated by the later civilizations.
In the late afternoon/early evening, you’ll arrive in Puno, a town located on the shores of Lake Titicaca.

Overnight GHL Largo Titicaca https://www.ghllagotiticaca.com/

Day 12, Monday 3 November: Puno, Uros, Taquile, Amantani Island (Overnight Amantani Island) B | L | D

Your day begins with a boat ride across the serene waters of Lake Titicaca to the Uros Islands, a unique group of floating islands made entirely of reeds. Explore these islands, learn about the history and traditions of the Uros people, and observe their distinctive way of life.
The islanders craft their homes, boats, and even entire islands from the reeds, offering you a fascinating insight into this ancient culture. Next, continue your journey to Taquile Island, known for its traditional weaving and vibrant textiles, which have earned the island a place on UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Take a guided walk through the island, visiting its community and learning about the ancient practices of weaving and agriculture that have been preserved for generations. Enjoy spectacular views of the lake and the surrounding Andes as you explore. Enjoy a traditional lunch on Taquile Island, with locally sourced ingredients, allowing you to savor the flavors of the region while enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of the island.

In the afternoon, depart for Amantani Island, where you will spend the night.
This tranquil island is known for its lush landscapes and peaceful atmosphere. Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by local families who will host you in their homes, offering you a unique chance to experience traditional Andean hospitality. We will take a late afternoon hike to the Pacha Mama and Pacha Tata temples at the top of the island for a spectacular sunset over Lake Titicaca, surrounded by the Andes mountain range.

After a delicious dinner with your host family, spend the night in a traditional Amantani home, immersing yourself in the island’s culture and customs. Amantani has no regular electricity (generator service provides lighting and hot water in the evening) and – in my past experiences – absolutely astonishing views of the stars at night. Having stayed with locals on the island previously, it was a magical experience that I wanted to include on this tour.

Overnight Amantani Island, local family accommodation.

Day 13, Tuesday 4 November: Waru Waru, Amara Muru, Bolivia border crossing (Overnight La Paz) B | L

Start your day with a traditional breakfast in Amantani, prepared by the welcoming local families. Experience the warmth of Andean hospitality while enjoying a locally sourced meal and taking in the spectacular views of Lake Titicaca and the surrounding mountains. After breakfast, depart Amantani Island and head back towards Puno, making a stop at the remarkable Waru Waru agricultural terraces. These ancient raised fields, built by the Pre-Inca cultures, were designed to withstand harsh environmental conditions and are an excellent example of Andean agricultural ingenuity.

Continue your journey with a visit to the mysterious Aramu Muru doorway, located in a scenic area near Lake Titicaca. This stone portal, carved into the cliffs, is shrouded in legend and is thought to be an ancient ceremonial site. Often called the “Gate of the Gods,” it is a place of intrigue and spiritual significance.

We will continue to the land border crossing and the formalities of crossing over into Bolivia. Please ensure you have a Bolivian Visa if required – check online for your specific nationality and country requirements. US Citizen require a visa, Australian citizens do not, but please ensure you meet the entry requirements for Bolivia well in advance of the trip.

Once across the border, we will continue with a short drive to La Paz, stopping to admire the spectacular view of this high-altitude city, before arriving at our hotel for the next 2 nights.

Day 14, Wednesday 5 November: Tiahuanaco, Puma Punku (Overnight La Paz) B| L

We will have the entire day to explore the utterly remarkable and mysterious ancient site of Tiahuanaco, and nearby Puma Punku (part of the same site). This amazing place has fascinated researchers and explorers for centuries, it’s true origins are shrouded in mystery and controversy, and it features some of the most incredible precision stonework anywhere in the world – a truly unique site that must be seen (at least once) by anyone interested in the mysteries of ancient human civilizations.

Once a port city on the Lake, it’s origins stretch far back in time, and Ben will explain the research and evidence that suggest this ancient city is far older than its modern, mainstream attribution of around 400AD. Nearby Puma Punku, like the Akapana, is a massive and constructed step pyramid with huge blocks of stone, tiny precisely made drill holes, the incredible and notorious ‘H’ blocks, and astonishing features and stonework everywhere you look.

The site has been extensively quarried, and we will also have time to explore the small town around the site, built with stone from Tiahuanaco, particularly the local church and town square.

Lunch in Tiahuanaco, then return to La Paz.

Overnight La Paz

Day 15, Thursday 6 November: La Paz to Juliaca, Fly to Lima B| L

Start your day with a comfortable transfer from La Paz to Juliaca, crossing the border back into Peru. The drive offers beautiful views of the Andean landscapes as you leave the altiplano region behind.
Once in Juliaca, you will catch a domestic flight to Lima, Peru’s vibrant capital.
Upon arrival in Lima, you will have a chance to rest, explore the city, or do some last minute shopping, depending on your flight schedule.
After spending time in Lima, your journey concludes with a flight to your home
destination.
