Happy Summer Solstice! (for us of the North!)

Happy Summer Solstice! This is the sun setting over the desert at Abu Ghorub, Egypt. The Sun is the reason we have life on this planet. We don’t pay that much attention to it in our modern era, but all life revolves around the cycles of the Sun. The seasons of the planet, our health and happiness, our food supply, it is all connected very closely to this billions of years old blazing ball of nuclear fire. We learnt of our connection to the sun early on, we developed symbolic religions around it, we knew that the coming of the sun and it’s warmth was directly connected to our prosperity and survival. Many of us still worship the Sun without realizing it – Christianity, Islam, Judaism are all derivative Sun cults, constructed from the bits and pieces of other, more ancient Sun cult religions – those of ancient Egypt, India, and so many others.

I hope you are all well, where ever these words are reaching you, and that you mark the passage of this of this cosmically significant day in some small way in your life! I hold out hope that more of us will celebrate these eternal markers of the passage of time, as the ancients did, in recognition of the importance that the cosmic environment plays in our everyday life. And if I’m honest, I hope we all do a little less celebrating of the hallmark and cosmically insignificant holidays that have replaced such events in our culture.
