Vase STL file for 3D Printing

I’ve received a few enquires about a STL file for the pre-dynastic granite vase that would be suitable for 3D printing. Many thanks to Bill Seiler for both creating this resource and for sending me a few copies of the vase!

Check out my three posts containing videos discussing this remarkable artifact, if you haven’t seen them already:

Video 1 , Video 2 (with the original STL file), Video 3

Below you can download the ‘fixed’ STL that is suitable for 3D printing.

  1. I am still getting errors when downloading to Snapmaker Luban, can you advise which software you normally use.
I would also like to know if you have intentionally used a total fill of the vase instead of just filling between the inner and outer skin which would be normal for a vase.

  2. G’day Ben and everyone else!

I recently made a 3D virtual experience for UnchartedX (totally on spec) which features a model viewer for the .STL file.

You can look around the Egypt exhibition while listening to the UnchartedX Podcast, or watch the last YouTube video.

Get your name on the waiting list for Egypt 2024, join the Patreon or grab a hoodie from the merch store – there’s a lot packed into this tiny little room.

Don’t forget to check out the menu in the top left hand corner, virtually all icons, logos, tags and videos throughout the experience are interactive.

I hope you all enjoy it!

      1. G’day Ben, sorry to bother you here again, but I just wanted to know if you were interested in testing the viability of this experience as a novel revenue stream, by posting it somewhere?

My work is a gif to you, if you choose to use it.

I just need to know, because if you don’t wish to do anything with it, I’d like to archive it, as it takes up usable space in my software account.

        Please let me know

  3. Thanks for posting the printable .stl. I did notice that the surface now appears “bumpy” compared to the original .stl posted. I compared both files in Fusion 360 and noticed that because I added a polished aluminum shader to see surface quality on both. I did notice that if I stitched up the original surface in a particular way, the surface would all-of-a-sudden become bumpy like this file.

Since I will be printing this on a resin printer (Form 3+) at .005mm tolerance, I needed to hollow this out completely (shell) and then put a hole in the bottom to prevent “cupping” (suction created in cavity while printing in resin liquid). So I basically have a shelled, hollow bottom version I created for my own purposes. I wanted to print the surface as accurate as possible, so I will compare both .stl files as printed parts and then share with you for FYI. I’m sure most people aren’t using a Form 3+ or resin printer, but I am interested to see how fine the surface details come out.

Also, my .stl files seem to be at an odd size and don’t look scaled to actual size when I import to Fusion or printing software. What is the height of the vase? I couldn’t find it anywhere. I can guess from looking at the video, but actual size would be ideal. Thanks!

      1. Thanks… I ended up just approximating looking at context shots next to Chris Dunn. etc. The file came in way too small at 1.8″ tall. I tried various methods of import (metric vs imperial). It is common for .stl files to have this issue, so no biggie.

If there are any future files, it’d be great for the CAD specs posted had the overall dims added.

        Thanks!

    1. Yes I have the same problem. When importing the STL file into the Creality slicer it imports very small (about a cm in height) . A height dimension in mm to scale the vase in the slicer would be much appreciated. Thanks

    2. Ben to be more precise the .stl file imports at a vertical height of 3.34mm. Its a simple solution to scale it to actual size if we have the height. thanks again
